In 2007 the apartment blocks in Neue Leipziger Straße (no. 2 to 28) comprising 550 apartments (in the northern part of the Leipzig district of Grünau), which were popularly known as the “Eiger Nordwand“, were demolished. This was done in the context of urban redevelopment. Two weeks before the demolition, Harald Kirschner took photographs of the apartments as they had been left by their tenants and partly destroyed by vandalism. The work focuses on confrontation with the past. Remains of the past, such as wallpaper, various designs, alterations and additions or whatever was left, all tell stories about the inhabitants of the apartments. Vitality, colourfulness, diversity and individualism appear behind the smooth facade of a prefabricated block of flats. |
