The Leipzig Mendelssohn4th February – 10th May 2009Opening on Tuesday, 3rd February, 06:00 pm 4th October 1835 – Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who is only 26 years old, gives his first concert as the Musical Director of the Leipzig “Gewandhaus“ concert hall. The applause is overwhelming and (metaphorically), hardly ceases from that time on. It seems that everything this charismatic scion of an upper-class family does, turns into a success: His compositions are successful, the orchestra outdoes itself and becomes an outstanding European ensemble, the concert programmes are rejuvenated, a monument to the revered Bach is constructed and the first academy for educating musicians in Germany is established. In February 2009, we commemorate Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s 200th birthday. The exhibition by the Museum of City History Leipzig deals with Mendelssohn’s life, work and his impact in Leipzig. It sheds light, not only on his living and working environment, his friends, colleagues and the women at his side but also on his competitors, on the basis of pictures, documents and letters, some of which have never been shown publicly before. The composer’s creative process is illustrated by means of valuable autographs, corrected versions and early prints. The official website: Der Leipziger Mendelssohn |
