Battle and liberationMore than 350 original objects paint an impressive picture of the Völkerschlacht (Battle of Leipzig, or Battle of the Nations) and of all the nations involved, giving a deeper understanding of the events at the time. On 18 October, 1813 the allied armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden force Napoleon’s army into retreat, marking the end of his hegemony in Europe. Some 500,000 soldiers from all over Europe came and fought for the political future of the continent in one of the cruellest battles of the 19th century. |
