Heroes made to measure

200th Anniversary of the Battle of the Nations

4 September 2013 to 2 March 2014
Opening: 3 September 2013, 6 pm
Böttchergäßchen 3, 04109 Leipzig

This exhibition is dedicated to the German "founding myth" which, with its many facets, is essentially based on the events that took place around the year 1813. However, instead of names, dates and orders of battle, the exhibition focuses on the myth of the "Wars of Liberation" and the history of its perception over a period of 200 years. In this process, views of history are deconstructed and critically analysed. A panopticon of persons and objects relates fascinating, touching, curious, bizarre and even cruel stories and provides access to mental constructs of past centuries which have had an effect up until and including the present day. The visitors get to become aware of a multi-facetted myth which transcends mere facts. Last but not least, all of these stories lead to questions about the present - and the current self-image of the German nation.
