As a specialised academic library, the library of the Leipzig City History Museum collects publications about Leipzig and the city's history.

The holdings of around 120,000 volumes include extraordinary special collections, e.g:

  • large collection of the ‘Illustrirte Zeitung’
  • Collections on the Battle of the Nations, the Wars of Liberation and Napoleon
  • Collection on Richard Wagner and F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy (Rudolf Elvers Collection)
  • History of the German labour movement from 1860 onwards
  • Historical holdings of the Chamber Library of the Leipzig Chamber of Industry and Commerce

Outstanding books from the collection are, for example:

  • ‘Glossa in apocalypsim’ from 1481, the first book printed in Leipzig
  • Johann Jacob Vogel's ‘Leipzigisches Geschicht-Buch oder Annales ... ’ from 1714, with around 900 bound copper engravings
  • a first edition of no. 1 of Reclam's Universal Library from 1867

Use and research


The library can be used by persons over the age of 12. Our holdings can only be consulted in the reading room. It is possible to search the museum's collection database by prior appointment. Only ten objects are available for inspection at any one time. It is not possible to place a large order for the same day.

Use of the library is free of charge. Fees for other services are based on the applicable fee schedule.

 

Research                

Research in the library's conventional catalogues is required.

Items can be ordered by e-mail. For this we require the call number, author/short title and year of publication of the desired titles.
