2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the world from National Socialism by the Allies. The Capa House in Leipzig is also marking the anniversary this year. The project “Routes of the US Army's Liberation through Central Germany 1945” reconstructs the advance of the US divisions from the Normandy coast to the Elbe with an interactive map and an exhibition, showing their most important stations and the dates of the capture of central German towns. It is precisely here that this US chapter of East German history has almost been forgotten due to the handover of the conquered territory to the Red Army and the one-sided remembrance policy of the GDR. Through the inclusion and visualization of archives, museums and memorial sites in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, this debate is brought into the present and the question “Who liberated whom?” is reflected with its ambivalences and historical complexities.
The “Ways of Liberation” are also the focus of an exhibition that will open in the Capa House on April 15, 2025.
“Paths of Liberation” is a project of CAPA Culture gGmbH and is supported by the U.S. Consulate General Leipzig/Embassy of the United States of America.
