Opening: Sunday 07th October 2018, 17:00
Kultur- und Begegnungszentrum Ariowitsch-Haus e.V., Hinrichsenstraße 14, 04105 Leipzig
In cooperation with the Historical Museum of the City of Leipzig the Ariowitsch House presents the exhibition FRAGMENTS - Pogroms of November 1938 in Saxony.
Eighty years ago, in november 1938, the National Socialist November pogroms took place. In the region of present-day Saxony, people persecuted as Jews faced widespread humiliation and violence, including murder, arrests, destruction of housing and business, and looting. Synagogues and facilities of Jewish communities were destroyed in many cases. The number of surviving eyewitnesses who can still report on the events continues to decline due to their age.
For the first time, the exhibition FRAGMENTS, that will be presented at three locations, gives an overview of the November pogroms in Saxony, including even smaller towns. On the basis of extensive research, it focuses on people who were persecuted, on perpetrators or spectators. On the one hand, the pogroms were the culmination of the radicalization of Nazi Jewish politics in 1938. At the same time, however, they formed a frightening caesura regarding their dimensions: for most persecuted people after that cruel event nothing was the same as before.
Opening hours: Monday to Thursday from 9:00 to 17:00, on Sundays (events)
Organizer: Stadtgeschichtliches Museum in Kooperation mit Ariowitsch-Haus e. V.
