The principle behind the “camera obscura”, which was developed yet further in the pinhole camera, is the simplest and most original form of photography.
Rays of light fall through a tiny hole into a dark box and the lighted scene outside appears upside down on the inside of the rear wall of the box. Photosensitive paper records that which, otherwise, is transient. The Leipzig painter Sighard Gille rediscovered this simple principle for himself – and it opened up for him new forms of self-expression in dealing with a classical subject – the city.
White New York is the title of the first series which offers poetic insights into a seemingly deserted New York City. Sighard Gille also rediscovered Leipzig through the perspective of the self-imposed “pinhole camera slowness” and the painter’s eye.
