Tel Aviv instead of Leipzig: The Association of Former Leipzig Residents in Israel

Special Exhibition
December 1, 2026 – February 28, 2027
Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, Capa-Haus, Jahnallee 61, 04177 Leipzig

After the Shoah, Jewish life in Leipzig was almost completely wiped out; only a few survivors returned to the city. At the same time, numerous former residents of Leipzig were now living in Israel. The exhibition tells the story of the founding of the “Association of Former Leipzig Residents in Israel” in 1953 in Tel Aviv. It highlights the activities and achievements of this unique organization and its complex relationship with Leipzig. The association is presented as a key player in the context of German-Israeli relations, with its significant contributions to the culture of remembrance for Jewish life in Leipzig and throughout Saxony. The exhibition is based on the book “Der Verband ehemaliger Leipziger in Israel” by Sven Trautmann-Meincke, published by Hentrich & Hentrich Verlag.

An exhibition by CAPA Culture gGmbH and Hentrich & Hentrich Verlag as part of “Tacheles: Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony 2026,” sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony.
