Commemoration ceremony

In May 2025, we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. A war which brought untold sorrow and suffering to millions of people. For the people of Leipzig, the war ended on 20th April 1945 – with the final skirmishes around the symbol of the trade fair city, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations. The military commander in Leipzig held the national monument with between 100 and 200 troops from the Wehrmacht, the Volkssturm, and the Hitler Youth before he surrendered to the American army.

This important anniversary will be commemorated in a festive event with musical accompaniment. At the same time, an installation comprising historical image material and film sequences of the fighting around the Monument to the Battle of the Nations will be shown at the Hall of Fame to provide guests with a visual impression of the events unfolding during those final days of the war. The image installation will be shown at the monument until 29th June 2025 to invite guests to learn more about this historical turning point in Leipzig’s recent history.
