Leipzig history and stories using the example of an upper-class family over four centuries – that is the theme of the exhibition which the museum will present.
When the 20-year-old Johann Philipp Küstner came to Leipzig from Dreieichenhain near Frankfurt am Main around 1670, he had no idea that his descendants would one day shape the fate of the city as merchants and bankers, city councillors and mayors, electoral councillors and university professors, master builders and owners of manors, and as officers and art patrons.
And it was not only the Küstner family – many other families have left similar traces – which can still be seen in the names of houses and streets: Frege, Apel, Dufour, Löhr, Bose, Speck von Sternburg – to name only a few.
Representative portraits, architectural views, photographs and documents from the museum inventory enable the reconstruction of biographies and venues of this varied family history.
